FAQ - Polymeric Sand
WHAT IS POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND?
Techniseal Polymeric Jointing Sand is a high-tech mix of graded sand (ASTM C-144) and binder, specially formulated for the filling of narrow or wide joints when installing pavers, slabs or natural stones, or when replacing existing joints. Unlike conventional sand, it stays in place and remains stable. It softens when wet and firms up when dry to better resist soil movements.
WHY SHOULD I OFFER TECHNISEAL POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND TO MY CUSTOMERS?
Techniseal Polymeric Sand adds considerable value to any hardscape installation and can be added to the overall bid of a project. Customers demand it because they appreciate the esthetics and the maintenance-free care it offers.
AFTER INSTALLING POLYMERIC SAND, I CAN SEE A WHITE HAZE OVER THE PAVERS. WHAT IS THAT?
This is called "polymeric haze". It is sometimes caused by the non-usage of the leaf blower during sand installation. But more often, it is caused by under-wetting the joints during installation. RG+ and HP2 are FAST SETTING Polymeric Sands and they need plenty of water in a short period of time, this is why it is imperative to always wet using the «shower» mode. If the nozzle is set to the «mist» mode, it does not allow the joints to be sufficiently showered. If RG+ and HP2 Polymeric Sands are not sufficiently showered during installation, the first heavy rain after installation could wash out and activate dry polymers on the pavers, resulting in surface haze.
WHY IS TECHNISEAL POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY?
Techniseal is the company that brought polymeric sand to the industry more than a decade ago. No other company spends as much time and capital on research and development. Techniseal Polymeric Sand is tested and used worlwide. No other brand is more trusted by contractors in North America.
CAN I USE POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND WITH NATURAL STONES?
Yes. Techniseal recommends its HP2 Polymeric Jointing Sand for natural stones. It is possible to use HP2 on joints as wide as 4", as long as it is installed properly. NEVER use the product if joints are wider than 4 inches.
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO COMPACT POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND?
Very important. By compacting, you obtain joints that are nearly 20% stronger. Compacted joints absorb 60% less water, dry much more quickly and become water-resistant, denser, more compact and are much more durable. Good compaction means less call back!
WHAT IS THE "PLUS" TECHNOLOGY?
The RG+ and the HP2 are both engineered from Techniseal's "Plus" technology. They are nearly impossible to overwater and are water-resistant nearly 90 minutes after its installation. This means a contractor can do more jobs in a day, without worrying about rain.
CAN RG+ AND HP2 POLYMERIC JOINTING SANDS BE USED ON THE SAME JOB?
Yes. Both sands can be used on the same jobsite, although performance will vary between the two. Colors and installaiton procedures are identical.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPLACE EXISTING SAND WITH TECHNISEAL POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND?
Yes. Simply remove the old sand completely with power washer, let dry and apply Polymeric Sand following standard procedures.
CAN I TOP OFF JOINTS WITH A LITTLE BIT OF POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND?
No. Never top off joints that already have sand in them. Always empty the joints completely before applying new sand. Polymeric needs at least 1.5 inch in dept to work properly.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND TO DRY?
It takes polymeric sand a minimum of 24 hours without rain to dry. However, it takes 30 days for it cure completely
WE WERE CAUGHT BY A RAIN STORM WHILE APPLYING POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND. WHAT CAN WE DO?
Cover the pavers with a tarp as quick as possible, to prevent the rain from washing away the polymeric sand in the joints. RG+ and HP2 will resist a normal rain after 90 minutes but it will take a few hours before it can resist a rain storm.
HOW LONG DOES TECHNISEAL POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND LAST?
Techniseal has been testing its polymeric sand for the last 15 years. The results show that Polymeric Sand will get stronger with time. Properly installed and compacted, Techniseal Polymeric Jointing Sand could last well beyond 10 years.
IS TECHNISEAL POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND WATERTIGHT?
No. Although Techniseal Polymeric Jointing Sand resists water erosion, it is not completely watertight.
CAN I STORE POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND AND FOR HOW LONG?
Yes. Polymeric Joinitng Sand can be stored in a dry area. If stored in the right conditions, it will not deteriorate.
CAN I USE POLYMERIC JOINTING SAND EVEN IF MY JOINTS ARE VERY TIGHT?
Techniseal Polymeric Jointing Sand can be used on joints that are at least 1/8 inch wide. If there is no space between the pavers, there's no place for sand.
